Flying To Sacramento
The easiest place to fly into is Sacramento International Airport (SMF). It’s a fairly big airport and it’s a fairly big Southwest Terminal point, so ‘cheaper’ tickets might be there.

Flying To San Francisco
San Francisco is about a 90 min drive from Sacramento or about 2 hours on Amtrak. I would rent-a-car from SFO but you can make it with out renting a car with BART + Amtrak to Sac.

Driving
For those brave enough to drive to California. It’s a long way. Plan 3-4 days of travel from the midwest and much more from the east coast. Given the time of year, I would suggest the northern route over the southern.
